Important Notes

  1. Sophocles is one of the most famous playwrights of ancient Greece. Two of his best-known works, Oedipus Rex and Antigone, are considered essential reads because they explore profound themes of human nature, fate, justice, family loyalty, and the conflict between individual conscience and societal laws, all presented through compelling characters and intricate plots that remain relevant to modern audiences.

  2. You can purchase a well-regarded translation on Amazon — kindle (less than $1) or paperback (about $19): The Theban Plays: Oedipus at Colonus, Oedipus Rex, & Antigone. We will read two plays: Oedipus Rex (about 88 pages) and Antigone (about 80 pages).

  3. This is both a book club AND a fundraiser for our school. Suggested donation is $50 or an amount of your choice.

  4. DONATE with PayPal or a credit card. Please select "book club" from the drop-down menu. All donations are tax-deductible.

  5. Please join the book club even if you can't finish both plays. If you don't have time to read the plays, there's always Sparknotes!

  6. To join, please complete the form. If you have any questions, please reach out to exco@bhsecqueenspta.org.
