November PTA Meeting!

Time for our Annual Appeal!

Dear BHSEC Queens Parent(s) and Guardian(s):

We are thrilled to welcome incoming ninth graders, returning students and their families to the Bard High School Early College Queens community! We hope the school year has gotten off to a great start.

Our school is unique among NYC’s high schools. With small classes, an incredibly diverse student body, exceptional faculty, a rigorous high school curriculum and a degree-granting early college program, BHSEC Queens offers students a top-quality education. But this unique program is costly. In fact, our current yearly DOE funding is $3,000 less per student than it costs to run our school. The school community, including school staff, Bard College and the Parent Teacher Association must make up the difference. We can only meet our ambitious fundraising goals with your help.

How Can Your Family Help?

We hope that each BHSEC Queens family will make a donation at whatever amount they are able to afford.  While the suggested amount is $300 per family, it is most important to us that every family that wants to donate be able to do so.  Donations of any amount are welcome and appreciated. Your donation will help afford your student amazing opportunities to reach his or her intellectual potential, participate in terrific extracurricular activities, and earn a High School diploma and a Bard College AA  degree. Last year, PTA donations paid for new library and classroom books, science equipment and athletic uniforms, speakers, family events such as International Night, among many other things.

High parent participation in the fund drive, at any dollar amount, also helps the school raise funds from foundations and other sources.  For your convenience, we offer several ways to make your tax-deductible donation:

  • ONLINE: Make a one-time or recurring donation using a credit card via the PTA website at
  • MAIL: Mail your donation to BHSEC Queens PTA, 30-20 Thomson Ave, 6th floor, New York, NY 11101. Please make check Payable to the BHSEC Queens PTA.
  • IN PERSON: Via check, cash or credit card at a monthly PTA meeting or parent event.

If you wish to support a specific project or initiative, we suggest that you speak to Principal Thomson and consider a donation to the Principal’s Fund which you can do through the Bard Early Colleges site and clicking Support Us on the top of the page. All donations to the BHSEC Queens PTA and The Principal’s Fund are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by the law.

With gratitude for your support,

Valeri J. Thomson, Ph.D., Principal, BHSEC Queens

2017 Welcome Letter

Dear Families of BHSECQ,
Welcome back to all the returning families and a special welcome to all the new members of the BHSECQ community from the Parent Teacher Association!  By virtue of having a child at BHSECQ, you are a member of the BHSECQ PTA and we are glad you are part of our community.
Your PTA meets monthly.  We work closely with the school and our mission is three-fold: to support the BHSEC community so our children can excel, to advocate for our parents and students at large to bring positive change and to raise funds to support the BHSEC community.  Our budget priorities include purchasing the planners for all the students, funding the cost of the Y1 and Y2 seminar books, supporting school activities, clubs, athletics and school community events.  Please come to the meetings to learn about what is going on, to share your concerns, hear from speakers on topics of interest and help determine how our PTA funds are spent.
The first PTA meeting is Tuesday September 19th, in the auditorium on the eighth floor.  We will vote on the year’s budget, hold elections and discuss the upcoming events.  We hope to see you there!
We host several events throughout the year.  Some of our upcoming events include:
·    September 28 – A Back to School Night with curriculum information
·    November 16 – Faculty Appreciation Dinner
·    November (TBD) – Fall Annual Appeal Phonathon Fundraiser
·    December (TBD) – International Night
·    March (TBD) – Saturday Seminars where parents attend classes by BHSECQ professors
·    April (TBD) – Mix & Mingle and Silent Auction
·    May (TBD) – College Search “Talk Back” Panel Discussion where Y2 students and parents talk about their college searches.
All of the events and fundraising your PTA does need your help. Whether you have an hour or more, there are ways to help.  Just contact us, and together we will figure out a way you can help your child’s school.  There are many committees you can help with too.  You will receive an email soon from the PTA with ways you can help BHSECQ.  We know you will find being an active member of your PTA offers many benefits – learning about what is going on, a place to share your concerns, hearing from speakers on topics of interest and helping determine how your PTA funds are spent.
Our website,, has lots of information about your PTA, as well as information about the school and student activities.  You can also find the BHSECQ Calendar there with the dates of important school events, college visits, PTA meetings and more.
To ensure you receive information about upcoming events and speakers, please make sure we have your email.  If you are not receiving emails from the PTA, please send an email to us at and let us know your name, your child’s name and year and your email address or fill out our registration form here.
Please contact us with any ideas, questions or concerns you have.  We are looking forward to hearing from you and meeting you!
